In these pages, the informed reader will discover a simple description of what the Deep Space Network (DSN) is about, and how it works an aspect of NASA's spectacular planetary program that seldom found its way into the popular media coverage of those major events. Future historical researchers will find a complete record of the origin and birth of the DSN, its subsequent development and expansion over the ensuing four decades, and a description of the way in which the DSN was used to fulfill the purpose for which it was created. At the same time, the specialist reader is provided with an abundant source of technical references that address every aspect of the advanced telecommunications technology on which the success of the DSN depended. And finally, archivists, educators, outreach managers, and article writers will have ready recourse to the inner workings of the DSN and how they related to the more publicly visible events of the planetary space program.

I'm thrilled that there's a new printing of this, as it's brought the price of it down a lot. I bumped into this book in my library's reference section a few years ago, and really wanted a copy, but it was literally $200+ for used hardcovers at the time. I couldn't afford the time to read it at the library, and couldn't justify spending $200 on it, so a copy for <$50 is fantastic. The problem is that the new print run is really cheap. It's definitely worth the ~$25 price for a copy, and is probably worth more, but that's mostly because it's a huge book. I'm really happy that I got a copy and can read it, but I'm also a little sad that something so incredible comes in a somewhat disappointing package.
Anyway: great stuff, totally worth buying at this price, but go into it with low expectations for the binding of the book. If you want a "nice" version, the hardcovers are almost certainly worth the used prices.

UplinkDownlink A History of the Deep Space Network 19571997 Douglas J Mudgway Roger Launius Reviews
Great book for DSN'ers.
Uplink - Downlink is an outstanding history of the NASA Deep Space Network. However, Progressive Management Publications did a very poor job of converting the book's excellent illustrations rendering the captions essentially unreadable. The publisher needs to replace this edition with the illustrations redone properly.
